The blacklist has been compiled by the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU), an investigations team run by a former Scotland Yard detective, and is said to include suspected individuals linked through betting irregularities on other matches as well as those linked via a match-fixing investigation into tennis professional Daniel Koellerer. Koellerer has been given a life ban.

Tournament officials are expected to restrict access to players’ changing rooms, eating area’s and practice courts.

CityCenter officials Wednesday showed off two stylishly designed model units on the Mandarin Oriental’s 24th floor. The units were completed in an effort to help close sales on the building’s 227 residences.

As of this week, sales have closed on 49 CityCenter condominiums, including 24 units inside the Mandarin Oriental, statistics compiled by Union Gaming Group show. The combined sales price of the Mandarin units is $44.8 million, which translates into more than $1,000 per square foot.

At Vdara, sales have closed on 25 condo-hotel units totaling $12.1 million.

On Wednesday, CityCenter developer MGM Mirage said it would take a noncash impairment charge of $171 million in the first quarter related to the development’s residential component. CityCenter, MGM Mirage said, benefited during the quarter from $24 million in revenues related to forfeited residential deposits.

The Mandarin Oriental’s one-, two- and three-bedroom residences start at 1,110 square feet and are as large as 4,000 square feet on the building’s upper floors. Prices start at around $1 million and increase based on the unit’s size and location.

The 185 one- and two-bedroom residences occupy floors 24-40 with 11 units per floor. The 42 penthouses command floors 40 through 47.

The primary sales pitches, said CityCenter Residential Division Executive Vice President Tony Dennis, are the Strip and mountain views offered by the units and the Mandarin Oriental’s location at the entrance to the $8.5 billion CityCenter.

“This truly is a building with a location like no other,” Dennis said.

Before the sales closings, which began in January, Dennis said about 90 percent of Mandarin’s condominiums had been reserved by buyers putting up earnest money. He expects some of the sales to fall through because of the economy.

Hence, the reason for the model units.

Dennis displayed two 2,829-square-foot, two-bedroom units, one on the 40th floor that was unfurnished, and a similar furnished model on the 24th floor. The units cost about $2.2 million.

Buyers, when their sales close, receive an unfurnished residence with one of three different finishing packages designed by Kay Lang + Associates.

An 1,100-square-foot furnished one-bedroom condominium was also unveiled. Dennis said the unit’s price was about $1.1 million.

The Review-Journal was also given a peek at an unfinished three-bedroom, three-bathroom, 3,800-square-foot corner penthouse unit on the building’s 41st floor. The residence offered floor-to-ceiling views to the west, across CityCenter to the Bellagio fountains, and to the east.

A similar unit on Mandarin’s 45th floor sold at the end of March for $6.966 million to a woman from Alabama, according to Clark County public records.

Union Gaming Group Principal Grant Govertsen, who has been following the Strip’s high-rise residential market, said he expects the upper-floor penthouse units to sell more quickly than the one- and two-bedroom condominiums simply because of economics.

“If you can afford multiple residences, including a $7 million house, you are probably paying cash,” Govertsen said.

He said the time frame for closing the condominium sales is much longer than MGM Mirage had anticipated.

Still, any sales closing at CityCenter, which has a total 2,400 residential units, is welcome news to investors.

“Even though only a fraction have closed, it represents an upside to investor expectations,” Govertsen said.

However, it doesn’t appear that Kerkorian, a 92-year-old Los Angeles billionaire who was never charged in the case, will face criminal prosecution.

The statements were part of a 2008 order issued by U.S. District Judge Dale Fischer, which was recently unsealed and surfaced in connection with a Los Angeles state court lawsuit.

Kerkorian is considered one of the founders of modern Las Vegas, having built the MGM Grand and spurred the expansion of MGM Mirage.

Kerkorian negotiated the $6.4 billion buyout of Mirage Resorts to then-MGM Grand Corp. in 2000 and regularly consults with company executives on various matters.

Kerkorian is still an active member of the MGM Mirage board of directors. He currently controls 43 percent of MGM Mirage’s outstanding shares. Kerkorian had owned 53.8 percent of the company until May when MGM Mirage completed a $2.6 billion restructuring package that kept the casino operator from filing bankruptcy.

Nevada Gaming Control Board Chairman Dennis Neilander said Thursday he was withholding comment until he had a chance to further review the matter.

Kerkorian’s personal wealth has taken a hit during the recession. In March, Forbes magazine dropped him from 41st to 98th on its list of the world’s richest people. His stake in MGM Mirage at the time, once valued at $15 billion, had shrunk to less than $400 million.

Kerkorian has repeatedly denied knowing that his attorney, former MGM Mirage board member Terry Christensen, and celebrity private investigator Anthony Pellicano, had tapped the phone of his ex-wife, Lisa Bonder Kerkorian, in 2002. Christensen resigned from the MGM board when he was indicted in 2005.

Christensen and Pellicano were convicted in a criminal trial last year and sentenced to federal prison for their roles in the wire tapping. Christensen was given a three-year prison term while Pellicano was sentenced to 15 years. Kerkorian testified in the case.

Reuters news service reported that Fischer, who oversaw the trial, said there was “reasonable cause to believe that (Kerkorian) was” complicit in their illegal conduct, according to court documents.

“Because the conversations are not privileged, the Court need not decide whether Kerkorian was complicit in the alleged illegal conduct,” Fischer wrote in the opinion, according to Reuters. “However, the communications themselves provide a reasonable cause to believe that he was.”

The judge noted that recordings show Christensen “does not deny that he is telling Kerkorian what Pellicano is hearing” on the wiretaps, Reuters reported.

Both a spokeswoman for Kerkorian’s Tracinda Corp., his privately held investment arm, and a spokesman for MGM Mirage, declined comment.

Christensen was a 35-year confidant, personal attorney and adviser of Kerkorian and had been on the MGM Mirage board since Aug. 1, 1987, when he resigned in February 2006. He spent a year as president of Tracinda in 1987, helped form MGM Grand Air and MGM Grand Corp.

He was alleged to have sought details about Bonder Kerkorian during the high-profile legal battle with her former husband over child support in 2002.

Bonder Kerkorian wanted $320,000 a month from Kerkorian to support her then 4-year-old daughter, but she later admitted that she faked a DNA paternity test by using saliva she obtained from Kerkorian’s adult daughter.

A judge later ruled that the child was entitled to $50,316 a month.

Kerkorian had a decade-long romantic relationship with Bonder Kerkorian, but they were married for only a month in 1999.

Prosecutors claimed Christensen paid Pellicano at least $100,000 to illegally wiretap the phones of Bonder Kerkorian.

MGM Mirage is facing a licensing hearing in front of New Jersey gaming regulators over the company’s suitability to hold a gaming license in the state because of its Macau joint venture partnership with Pansy Ho, daughter of casino magnate Stanley Ho, who is alleged to have ties to organized crime.

Observers speculated the Kerkorian matter could now be an issue for the New Jersey Casino Control Commission.

“I’m sure the Division of Gaming Enforcement is aware of the litigation and will review the matter and report to us at the appropriate time,” commission spokesman Dan Heneghan said Thursday.

John Acres, president of Talo Nevada, told commissioners Sept. 17 he is working on a personalized gaming program that through player tracking could operate at a slow pace with small rewards for those who want a longer slot experience or a faster-paced game with more volatility and higher rewards.

“When players enter a casino, they have a pretty good idea about the kind of game they want to play, but nobody is able to tell a player how to find a game that they like,” Acres said.

Some players, Acres added, don’t really know what they want until they see it.

The Talo machine would gauge what pace a player likes and gear the game toward his desire.

“It’s kind of like Amazon,” Acres said. “It’s saying, ‘If you like this, you may also like this.’?”

But he stopped short of saying the machine could think.

Asked whether a personalized gaming program could potentially alter slot pay tables, Acres said a machine can pay a player in many ways — quickly or slowly — and still maintain a programmed payback percentage.

Acres, founder of Acres Gaming, is widely credited with inventing the modern slot machine player tracking system. He also founded the Gaming Standards Association and has invented a line of bicycles.

Acres was the co-founder of Mikohn Inc., now Progressive Gaming International, and at Acres Gaming, the company specialized in developing concepts and technologies related to bonuses and player tracking on machines manufactured by Anchor Gaming, International Game Technology, Bally and Aristocrat.

The commission’s approval licenses Talo as a manufacturer and distributor.

In other business, the commission approved an order of registration for BH/RE LLC, operators of Planet Hollywood, which gave commissioners the opportunity to ask about the property’s new Westgate tower, which will be completed next month and opens in November.

The 50-story, 1,200-unit tower was built as a time-share property, but will serve as overflow accommodations for the hotel. The tower, which won’t have a casino, will provide 800 jobs.

Commissioners also approved several licenses for key executives, employees and directors. Winning unanimous approval were Michael Neubecker, chief financial officer of MGM Grand; Anton Nikodemus, president and chief operating officer of Monte Carlo; Ike Epstein, president and director of El Cortez; Derek Stevens, CEO of Golden Gate; Steven Driscoll, general manager of Gold Spike; Mickey Caley, general manager of Poker Palace; Phillip Simons, chief financial officer of Riviera; and Terrence Downey, general manager of Palace Station.

These days, while you might think it would be even more difficult to use credit cards, considering how long the UIGEA has been in “operation”, it has apparently gone the other way. According to recent reports, no to mention testimonials direct from U.S. facing online casinos, credit card processing has actually become easier. Casinos such as Cherry Red and Golden Casino make no qualms whatsoever about letting the general public know they have the ability to process U.S. credit cards.

The state monopoly claimed that Ladbrokes had misused the Svenska Spel trademark and that only a state monopoly could use the term “Swedish” and “Games” in commercial advertising and marketing.

The court ruled that Ladbrokes did not violate the trademark act of Sweden.

Ladbrokes countered with a law suit against Svenska Spel for violation of the Marketing Act for using terms such as “Svenska Spel is a world leader in responsible gaming” and “the most effective age verification online”.

The Court also ruled in favour of Ladbrokes and Svenska Spel faces a penalty of SEK 750 000 if they use these terms in future marketing activities.

“This case means that Swedish monopolies cannot extend their power to monopolising language” said Christopher Bell, Chief Executive of Ladbrokes. He went on to say, “We will continue to highlight the consumer benefits of a competitive market in betting and gaming in contrast to disproportionate state monopoly laws and actions that restrict competition and choice.”

Ladbrokes won a similar case against Danish monopoly Danske Spil recently, who had claimed a breach of primary trademark and marketing law in connection with Ladbrokes’ “Danish game, English odds” TV advertising campaign last year.

“It was the industry’s first substantial boost in monthly revenue since December 2007.

“Casinos in Black Hawk, Colorado’s premier gambling destination and home to the largest operators, were the biggest winners, posting record revenue of $54.5 million, up 19 percent from the same month a year ago.

“Overall, casinos statewide reported $76.2 million in adjusted gross proceeds, which are total bets minus payouts. That represents the second-best month in total revenue, trailing only the $76.5 million posted in July 2007…”

Two down one to go for WPT winner Gomes
Following a World Series bracelet win in last year’s World Series, Team PokerStars Pro Alex Gomestoday cemented his place among the best in the game by winning the WPT Bellagio Cup V at Bellagio in Las Vegas. Despite losing the chip lead when heads-up against Faraz Jaka, Gomes, from Curitiba, Brazil, recovered powerfully to take the $1,187,670 first prize and a title that gives him two thirds of poker’s triples crown. Gomes overcame of tough field as the World Series main event played to a close along West Flamingo Road at the Rio. His opposition included a final table that included Eric Seidel and Justin Smith.

PokerStars adds Eric Buchman for November final
With the bulk of the main event now complete all eyes turn to November, when the November Nine will reconvene to play first to two and then to one. One player who will be playing under the PokerStars banner is Eric Buchman. The 29-year-old from Valley Stream, New York, finished last week with 34,800,000 chips leaving him in second place ahead of the final table. It will be Buchman’s third World Series final table and his biggest payday to date regardless of where he finishes. He’ll join Kevin Schaffel in the PokerStars colours at the main event finale.
